Exposure
Ceres is proud to offer a series of one week exhibitions for artists not affiliated with our gallery. The shows titled Exposure will permit artists to hang their own work and participate in a Chelsea exhibition providing a venue as a “test of the waters” to young artists, underrecognized artists, and artists of various ethnic backgrounds.

Let’s talk about our art and where it came from, where it’s going, and what might happen next. We will look at subject, form, content, technique, medium, style and any other thing that presents itself. Bring several examples of your work and together we will uncover fresh insights and inspiration.
Joan Arbeiter is an inaugural member of Ceres, coauthor of Lives and Works: Talks with Women Artists, and has 30 years experience teaching art.

Mimi Smith has been making art from a feminist perspective before there was a feminist art movement. In 1965, when Mimi was in grad school and grown women were known as “girls,” she started to create sculptures in the form of clothing. Two of her most notable, now-iconic pieces are her “Steelwool Peignoir”and “Wedding Dress” installation. With her messages on clocks, installations, artist’s books and drawings, Mimi gave herself a unique voice in significant current events - most of which are still relevant today - such as her late 1970s admonition in performances and drawings to world leaders to “Sit Right Down and Stop That Fighting.” Her knotted thread and tape measure process wall drawings of a door and stairs from the house she was living in were selected for inclusion in the recent historically significant WACK! Show. She is represented by the Anna Kustera Gallery in NYC.You are invited to join us as Mimi shows how she has continued to transform widely recognizable objects and commonly shared concerns and experiences into art which is both agreeably ironic and politically powerful.Slide talk and discussion
