STATEMENT
Tenderness. Light. Intensity.
True art provokes the spirit. The painting has a life of its own. I let it live. The light and dark images in my work evoke our struggles to overcome spiritual darkness, striving toward the joy and freedom of light.
Painting is intimate. To create authentic work, I first empty myself of all internal chatter. Once I am fully present, I can set an intention and allow surprises to emerge.
Intention leads to the story. I let each piece evolve, with unrelenting honesty nurturing its transcendence into art. A successful journey leads to a profound expression.
Painting is physical. I experiment with texture, size, perspective, light. I layer color on color to create visual depth, and connect with elements—water, earth, air, and fire—to create movement and drama.
Sargam Griffin
Sargam Griffin, designer and artist, was born in 1962 in Bueckeburg
, Germany.
As a child, Griffin traveled extensively with her family. She was particularly influenced by her trips to the North Sea, Kilimanjaro and the Pyramids. At each of these places, her imagination was captured by the textures and colors of life. In 1977, she traveled alone to Africa. Griffin has also extensively explored Europe and Egypt. She spent time living in Italy and Switzerland in 1978 and 1979. Subsequently, she went to India and spent time there from1988-1990. All of these experiences have impacted and influenced her work from the colors she applies to the depth of the patina used on the surfaces of her paintings. These travels furthered an in depth personal exploration enhancing the development of her aesthetic self.
In 1982 Griffin moved to San Francisco, where her passion for painting evolved. She studied at the Day Studio for professional finishing and decorative art where she perfected skills in gilding and glazing, Venetian plaster finishes, finishing work, and colors. This kept her in high demand for the next 25 years, completing projects for clients like:
The Jodo Mission on Maui
Pac Bell Headquarters ,San Francisco
The Kapaa Sands Hotel in Kauai
Law Offices in Honolulu
Devcon Construction Headquarters
The Mission Hotel in San Jose
As well as countless private estates throughout Silicon Valley and San Francisco
Griffin's work has been featured in many publications such as House Beautiful , Interiors , local Palo Alto and Los Altos newspapers.
Over time, there was a natural transition from her work on wall finishes to creating her own unique compositions on canvas. Griffin usually works on large scale canvases and is currently painting on a series of oils called, Compositions . She primarily paints on museum quality hand crafted frames, birch panels or clay boards and applies many thick layers of oil paint. This gives her work a feeling of great spatial depth as well as a dreamy ethereal quality. In some work like the Pear Series, they are also varnished and hand waxed to achieve a feeling of being able to look inside.
At the present time, Griffin paints in her private studio in Northern California amongst the vineyards and the natural beauty of the land. She takes yearly trips to Germany and Italy. Sargam currently exhibits in Bay area Galleries and has her first New York Show coming up in 2010.
