We are pleased to invite you to apply for membership in Ceres, a non-profit alternative cultural center dedicated to promoting women in the arts. The gallery consists of two exhibition spaces: a main gallery for Full and National Full members and an adjoining gallery for Affiliate members. The privileges and obligations of each membership category are outlined below.
Full Members are responsible for monthy dues of $236 and a non-refundable initiation fee of $600 upon entering the gallery. Full members exhibit in the main gallery space and are included in-group and invitational shows. Full members are also required to attend monthly meetings and work on a committee. As a cooperative, the gallery is staffed by its members, and their participation is crucial to the smooth operation of the space. Each Full member is required to work as a gallery sitter twelve times a year, or she may choose to pay $50 in lieu of each sitting. Full members have full voting privileges.
National Full Members are responsible for monthly dues of $325 and a non-refundable initiation fee of $600 upon entering the gallery. National Full Membership was instituted primarily to accommodate artists who live more than 90 miles outside of New York City but who prefer to exhibit in the main gallery space. National Full Members are included in group and invitational shows. They are not required to attend monthly meetings or work on a committee, and their monthly dues include payment of sitters to staff the gallery. They receive minutes of meetings and can vote for officers, new members and by-law changes.
Affiliate members are responsible for monthly dues of $140 and a non-refundable initiation fee of $400 upon entering the gallery. Affiliate members exhibit in the smaller Affiliate gallery space and are included in-group and invitational shows. Affiliate members are not required to attend monthly meetings or to do committee work, but they are welcome and encouraged to do so. Affiliate members are required to work as a gallery sitter six times a year, or to pay $50 in lieu of each sitting. Affiliates receive minutes of meetings and can vote for officers, new members and by-law changes.
*A special note to teaching artists who are interested in gaining or retaining tenure:
Ceres is a unique group of women artists who are dedicated to the promotion of contemporary women in the visual arts regardless of age, style of work or commercial viability. If you have time constraints for showing with regard to tenure, please do not hesitate to discuss this issue with us. Members of Ceres enjoy a four-week solo exhibition at our premiere Chelsea exhibition space and this has helped a number of our teaching members gain or retain tenure. You will also be able to participate in an annual group exhibition as well as other special exhibitions that we mount each year. We currently have six teaching artists on our roster.
The exhibition cycle is approximately 2 1/2 years. Each member is entitled to a four-week solo exhibition during that time.
Thank you for your interest in Ceres. We look forward to hearing from you.
