STATEMENT
Maria Torffield is a multi-media artist. She was born and raised in East Germany and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. Her work is emotionally stirring and inspired by feminism and the environment. She uses sculpture and painting in a dramatic way to create powerful evidence of women's suffering, as seen in Final Cut, an installation about Female Genital Mutilation.
All kinds of materials fascinate her from found objects to clay and bronze, depending on the project. She often expresses her ideas realistically, but the formal considerations of three-dimensional sculpture are also part of her training and continuing exploration. Her work has been shown in different cities in the United States and in Europe and can be found in private collections.
