Driven by an archeological, environmental and political urgency, I travel through life discovering discarded materials which I am inspired to transform into meaningful and provocative works of art.
As a woman, dancer, teacher and visual artist I have found that my work weaves together my many passions. Over the years I have created bodies of work-sculptural paintings-all of which have been sparked by the interplay of my “gems” of found materials, into thick acrylic, oil paint and at times cement. These materials not only form layers and textures , but they pull the viewer into and around the painting as in a dance.
My work with the human figure, often on multiple canvases, breaks up and distorts the figure creating unexpected negative spaces, fully engaging the imagination of the viewer. My work is bold, highly textured and sensual. It is reminiscent of my exposure and involvement in a three dimensional space as a dancer, translated into a two dimensional format.
My desire is to arouse a kinesthetic response, a desire to touch. Ultimately, I want the observer to be pulled into and around the work, inspiring one to embrace new ideas, memories questions and perhaps passions.
