STATEMENT

For this Ceres Gallery on-line site I have selected my 1990’s portrait series, “Lives and Works: Women Artists”. These artists were featured in the book Lives and Works: Talks With Women Artists, Vol. 2, which I co-authored in the ’80s and which grew out of the Mary H. Dana Women Artists Series at Douglass College, Rutgers University, still on-going. Having spoken with, listened to, written and edited interviews with these subjects, I felt very connected to their struggles and successes, works and lives. This led to my desire to make their portraits and to enrich each one with visual references from the artist’s own artwork, along with selected bits of text descriptive of their themes, techniques and professional activities. For example, in the portrait of Miriam Schapiro, I collaged fabric which she allowed me to choose from her treasured collection.

Finally, the artist accepted my invitation to write a brief statement, in her own hand, directly on her portrait. Then each canvas became a unique mix of ideas, images and materials which, when taken together, offer a glimpse into the historical moments during the coming-of-age of the contemporary women’s art movement, 1970s through the 1990s.

Throughout my career I have been drawn to a number of subjects – nearly all figurative – and I find that during the exploration of these themes, the techniques and media have virtually suggested themselves! So it seems that, while it is important for an artist to know how to draw and paint, it is even more expressive and creative when the content is allowed to suggest its own form. These works are the product of this process.
