STATEMENT

I am a sculptor and mixed media artist. My art practice is influenced, for better or worse, by my initial design training from Parsons School of Design and a quarter of a century as a design professional. Shaking this training has been a challenge. Learning to be in the moment and to allow the materials to dictate the process has been an ongoing lesson of giving up control and ‘seeing’ what is in front of me. I make decisions, but the end product is a subjective interpretation. Sharing interpretation is remarkable: I want to dictate it. Now, I ask the viewer to simply pause, to identify or rethink what the surface, the textures, the negative space means to them.

As an artist, giving up what is known to walk into the unknown is a remarkable experience. As a retired psychotherapist, I tend to Identify with the contradictions and impermanence of life; therefore, it is not surprising that I chose materials that are fragile and will undoubtedly deteriorate over time.
