STATEMENT

THROUGHLINES

themes and images recurring in my work over decades

Body, Darkness, Earth, Guardians, Spirit

I am interested in the relationship of resonant found objects – both natural and human-made – to body and to deep personal/ancestral memory. I respond to those objects, pick them up, hold them in my hands. In my art I work with the energy I sense in those things.

I might begin with a drawing of a sea bass skull or an African mask. A beautiful twig or lobster claw might inspire the next. I work until the drawing mirrors something “real” back to me, an inner truth.

It is then that I see the connections of my drawing to the world inside me and the world around me, to my own history and to the present time and place.
