STATEMENT

In these paintings I shift my vision from the horizon, from a broad view of earth and sky, to what is underfoot. I work in encaustic on wood, occasionally incorporating a bit of related natural material into the wax.

Conceptually this work is about flow, disintegration, history, change, and depth. Forms expand and contract, take shape and are then dispersed with a kind of whirling energy. I share an intimate view, one in which I am awed and humbled by the natural world. The painting’s surface reflects nature: varied, highly textured, sometimes dull and sometimes luminous. The imagery recalls grains of sand, tide lines, shells, and the random stuff of beach walks. Some pieces convey calm, delicacy, and flow, while others explode with vibrant radiating energy.

As an artist my aim is to bring the viewer into my way of seeing and experiencing life at the water’s edge. A calm approach to the work can move one at once inward into the quiet and private world of the tiniest sea creature, and outward into the vast and open world of stars, spirals and infinite space.
