YU RONG

STATEMENT

The Paradox of Things explores the inherent contradictions of human nature, focusing on the pursuit of wholeness and the emptiness that often accompanies it. In my Deformed: A Collage of Desire and Suffering series, I examine the fragmented human body as a reflection of desire, emotional turmoil, and the search for completeness. The human form is cut, rearranged, and undone in an endless pursuit of self, a journey defined by loss and longing. This process, where the past and present intertwine, reveals how searching for wholeness from the external world only leads to more fragmentation

Drawing from Zen Buddhist thought, I reflect on the nature of suffering and the transient nature of all things. In Zen, it is said that suffering arises from attachment—the desire to hold onto something that is impermanent. As we search for completeness in the external world, we often forget that true wholeness is found within. The very act of searching and clinging to external fragments of self only perpetuates the cycle of suffering, leading to further emptiness.

Through Deformed, I reflect on the universality of human suffering and longing—our search for love, affection, and acceptance, often at the expense of our own identity. These pieces invite the viewer to engage in the same process of seeking and losing, to question the gap between appearance and reality, and to contemplate the endless cycle of desiring and searching. The works are an exploration of the Buddhist concept of dukkha—the fundamental dissatisfaction that arises from clinging to impermanent things—and the possibility of liberation through letting go.

In addition to Deformed, I present the Symbols of Serenity series, a collection of daily reminders that ground me through personal challenges. Each day, I select a Chinese character that resonates with me, transforming it into an abstract shape that reflects its meaning—such as a flowing form for “water.” These symbols serve as a meditation on impermanence and offer a sense of stability in moments of difficulty, helping me reconnect with the present moment. The series reflects my ongoing effort to embrace serenity amid the paradoxes of life and to remind myself that true peace is found within, not in external validation or completeness.

The exhibition also features the Blue series, which draws from memories of someone once close, exploring attachment, loss, and the passage of time. As time distorts and fades memories, these works become increasingly blurred, mirroring the way we forget and reinterpret past experiences. The Blue series reflects how the search for completeness, whether through people, memories, or objects, often leads to more emptiness as the passage of time erodes clarity and understanding.
