Observing Women
Throughout the many chapters in my art making, I find myself returning to the female form and the theme of women as vessels of knowledge and nurturers of seeds. In this pandemic period I have had the privilege of living in upstate New York. The mountains of the Catskills evoke reclining women and I think of the many generations who have walked our precious earth. My forms pay homage to their unheard voices. I am tied to social and political narratives. Framed by stories of immigrant experience, I think of what it means to be a transplanted observer within the context of individual ancestral and cultural history. My reactions to events of the world and my observations of relationships and the challenges of being female are expressed through my work.
I often work with clay slabs that I texture before using. The surfaces on my ceramic sculptures, the arbitrary marks and patterns, speak for the arbitrary events that affect each being even before birth. I hope to suggest a sense that these forms arise, like seeds from the earth and from vast spans of time.
My interest is on how we cultivate those seeds.
