STATEMENT

I am a figurative artist whose work explores female sexuality. I work in charcoal on watercolor paper, slowly applying layer upon layer of charcoal, to create dense, weighty images. After completing my masturbation series One Body in 2014, I decided to extend my practice to include other women.

I invited everyday women in my small Pennsylvania town to take anonymous selfies of their own vulvas, from which I created large drawings exploring this most private part of a woman’s body. To find contributors, I relied on word-of-mouth, the way women have transmitted stories and information throughout the ages. Participants took selfies in the privacy of their own homes or at open house events in a photo booth constructed in my studio.

Resisting the trends of vaginal contouring and aesthetic labiaplasty, my drawings are an affirmation that each vulva is beautiful and unique, as is.
