Joyce Parcher

STATEMENT

Out of Chaos.. .

As an artist, whose work is subject to various influences, my paintings have been affected by recent events, both touching and tragic. I listen to the radio when I’m working, inevitably, the commentary I hear on NPR has seeped into my work.

By putting disparate elements and moods together, I’ve tried to portray what the Buddhists speak of as the need to embrace both pain and pleasure in one’s life. The incongruous scenarios—variously depicting playthings, soldiers, clowns of a questionable nature, spirituality, guns, fun, menacing animals and dancers are my way of expressing the paradoxes in today’s world—what appears to be kind of worldwide acting out.

The conflicting elements I use are vehicle for the paint. Working with paint is a visceral and sensory experience that builds as I layer the paint, scrape it away, and add fresh color and motion using high-energy brushwork.

In certain respects, what results is a metaphor for a disorder, change and the indefatigable power of the human spirit… a reflection of the dichotomy of pain and pleasure we all experience over the course of time.

“The most powerful work, by Joyce Parcher. . . emotion and psychological
anguish are major components . . . Color is used selectively, emphasizing
the role of this art as haunting metaphor.”

Review – Quote New York Times 1/31/88:
“The bold drawings and gestural paintings . . . have strong psychological
overtones . . . the figures exude lines of force that emanate like the mysterious
